Yes, one could see the gap! Organizations hired right employees after rigorous round of interviews, excellent processes were in place, management followed open door policy, best products and services were offered in the market – and yet – the organization didn’t have wings to fly. Success always came late or it was never achieved as expected.
As an outsider that is what I could see in many large and small-scale organizations I was visiting. How many did I visit – well, thousands I would say, in my 14 years of working as an employee at various corporates and last many years of working as a soft skills trainer where I utilized the experience. By the time I started my own venture – Personal Reflection in 2016, I had worked in Enterprise Account Management, Direct Sales, Channel Sales, Marketing – Product side, ATL and BTL, Customer Service, M-Commerce and Media Industry. Also, I had been visiting few B Schools as faculty for Advertising, Consumer Behavior and Strategic Management.
I had passion for training. When I was in college, I used to go and market training programs of a leading training organization and got chance to attend few sessions as an audience to owners of leading business houses and directors of leading enterprises – which was a dream come true at that age. I still remember carrying pamphlets to various business hubs in the city and meeting the business owners and enrolling them for the programs.
During my corporate career I met many individuals with a vision – many of them running their own businesses – start-ups, family business, franchises, partnerships, private limited and limited companies. What surprised me was a common thread with was usually overlooked – though much diverse in industry and size, these companies had almost similar problem: lack of people handling skills or soft skills as many may term it.
One may have strong plans, but those who will execute them will understand the plot based on their experiences, thoughts, opinions, emotions, prejudices and assumptions. It can be explained in a simple graph:
